WORLD MUSIC

In this department you will find a small selection of recordings selected from our main database of over 17,000 available ‘World Music’ titles. This style of music that has become increasingly popular throughout the years, largely due to the activities of UK DJ’s like Andy Kershaw, John Peel and Bob Harris, but it is also a style for which we only had a passing interest for in the earlier days of CDS. We originally created this department mainly to accommodate existing customers only, but increasing consumer demand for the genre, has encouraged us to gradually expand on this area of the business. While we are into quite a few of the ‘World’ related titles in our specialist ‘Synth’ and ‘Ambient’ departments, we are only personally familiar with a few of the ‘bigger’ named musicians and labels in the traditional field of the genre. Black Uhuru’s early work is still a source of great enjoyment and enthusiasm, and Peter Gabriel’s ‘Realworld’ label has introduced us to acts that have made quite an impact on the scene, like Afro Celt Sound System. ‘Ambient’ crossover albums like Deep Forest’s debut release sold at CDS by the box load when it first appeared on import. Other examples of what we have championed in the past are: Ry Cooder & U.M. Bhatt with their stunning 90’s collaboration: ‘Meeting By The River’, 80’s band Dissidenten and more recently the series of ‘Nahoo’ albums by Paul Mounsey which have been going down a storm. However, this is a field of music that is wider than the Grand Canyon, and with all the ‘world’ at our feet, we are more than happy to help you with availability requests, price quotes and supply of the titles you are looking for, but please don’t treat us as experts – We are not!  Much of this style of music is as new to us as it is to you - We have plenty of it to offer, but we rely on feedback from ‘World Music’ fans out there to help us expand and populate the department as diligently as possible with the titles that you want to see made available in our store.
